People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) are not pleased with Katy Perry as the animal rights group has labelled the singer's use of animals for the video of latest single "Roar" as "horrific cruelty."

"Roar" is an animal-themed video which shows the 28-year-old singer in the forest with animals including monkeys, tarantulas, and elephants.

"Animals used for entertainment endure horrific cruelty and suffer from extreme confinement and violent training methods," a representative for PETA told the Daily Star. PETA is of the view that shooting with animals makes them stressed and anxious and is an act of forcing them to frightening situations.

"They often become stressed and anxious when hauled around and forced into unfamiliar or frightening situations," the spokesperson added.

PETA had suggested that the singer should instead have used computer generated animals instead if they needed to use animals. The animal right activist group said that 2011's hit film; "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" did a wonderful job with "wonderfully realistic computer-generated chimpanzees." Perry should have followed their example.

PETA, which has time and again reinforced that the animals should not be used for entertainment purposes, suspects Perry used controversial animal exhibitor Serengeti Ranch for the video shoot.

"The Serengeti Ranch, the animal exhibitor that we believe supplied the animals for the 'Roar' video, has been inspected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture 22 times since 2001," the representative added.

"Primates who are used in film and television productions have been taken away from their mothers at an early age and are forced to perform in ways that are unnatural and sometimes painful. They are often isolated from other primates, and physical abuse is common during pre-production training, where no monitors are present," they further revealed.

Ironically, PETA had previously touted Katy and former husband Russell Brand for adopting a vegetarian lifestyle.

"Roar" is the lead single off of Perry's upcoming fourth studio album "Prism." The album is scheduled to hit stores on Oct. 22. "Roar" sold over 559,000 copies and became a No. 1 hit for the singer. "Roar" breaks the record for set by "Firework, which sold over 1.7 million digital copies.

"Roar" has been dominating the Billboard 100 since its release.
