Phillip Phillips’ “Home” Hits No.1 on iTunes Charts, but He Says it’s “Too Pop” for Him
Home lyrics speaks of loving assurance and protection
American Idol winner, Phillip Phillips, thought his first single "Home" was "a little too pop" for his style.
In the Top 4 performance show on Idol, Phillips revealed the kind of music that he would really like to include in his album.
He picked Damien Rice's "Volcano" for songs they wished they'd written. It was arguably his best performance on the Idol stage. By Top 3 performance show, Phillips chose Matchbox 20's "Disease" for contestant's choice. Disease was like a cousin of Volcano in terms of mood, melody and lyrics. The fans could tell the kind of music album Phillips was likely to release.
However, his first single, "Home" (written by Drew Pearson and Greg Holden), did not sound close to Phillips' style at all. It was a good thing Phillips nailed it on the competition, and the song is now the number one most downloaded song on iTunes.
In an interview with Idol Chatter's Lindsay Deutsch, Phillips explained why he thought "Home" was a little too pop for him.
"I really don't put in the oh-oh-ohs, but it's a very good song and I'm glad people like it. I feel like I'm a little more rock than that, so hopefully people like what I have to put out, some jazz rock stuff."
Did Phillips get to choose from a list of songs for the finale?
Phillips told Deutsch he did not really get to choose a tune for his single.
"They kind of just threw that song out there and felt that was the right fit for me. I wanted to do one of my own songs I'd written, but with the short amount of time we couldn't really do it. It's a good song, but it's not really something I would write. I'm glad people like it because it's a good song with good writing," Phillips said.
Home video and lyrics
Volcano and Disease both have lyrics that described pain and relationship troubles. Home is a little more optimistic, although it spoke of some kind of trouble, too. Only this time, someone's giving hope and loving assurance.
Perhaps the reason why Phillips was able to render the right emotions to it (and why fans easily related to it) is because of its powerful words:
Hold on to me as we go
As we roll down this unfamiliar road
And although this wave is stringing us along
Just know you're not alone
Cause I'm gonna make this place your home
Settle down it'll be all clear
Don't pay no mind to the demons
They will fill you with fear
The trouble, it might drag you down
If you get lost, you can always be found
Just know you're not alone
Cause I'm gonna make this place your home
Following "Home" on iTunes' top three Thursday were "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen and "Somebody that I Used to Know" by Gotye.
