Pinterest Lands in Top 10 Social Interest Sites
Here's another social media site that will keep you up all hours of the night: Pinterest, which functions as a virtual pinboard for all your interests. The site has exploded in recent months and is now in the top 10 social sites, according to Experian Hitwise, which measures and analyzes consumer behavior on the Internet.
Pinterest, a start-up based in Palo Alto, Calif., has emerged as one of the top social sites in 2011, according to the Experian Hitwise Networking and Forum category. The site debuted in March and has grown rapidly. The invitation-only site received more than 11 million visits in the week that ended Dec. 17, which is almost 40 times the number of total visits the site received six months ago. It's already the number 10 social site among the 6,581 sites Hitwise tracks.
The social media platform features a range of content. Users can create virtual boards where they can "pin" images with a short description. The visual bookmarks make it easy to share content with friends. Your friends can even pin photos and info to your own boards which makes it easy to plan big trips or weddings. A lot of the featured content is dominated by home décor, fashion, crafts and food. Hitwise found that 58 percent of the users are female and 59 percent were between the ages of 25 and 44.
The other top sites in the list were Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Yahoo!Answers, Tagged, Linkedin, MySpace, myYearbook and Yelp. Surprisingly Google+ didn't make the top ten list. Pinterest received $27 million in funding led by Andreessen Horowitz in October.
