PM JuLia Gillard Reacts to Opposition's Fundraiser Menu: 'Sexist, Insensitive to Women '
Opposition Menu: 'Julia Gillard Kentucky Fried Quail-Small Breasts, Huge Thighs & A Big Red Box' Opposition’s'
Prime Minister Julia Gillard declares that the Tony Abbott's Coalition has once again proven its total insensitivity to women as a fundraiser menu was written to directly insult her.
The sexist menu was made in a Brisbane fundraiser in March for former Howard government minister Mal Brough. The event was attended by 20 people including shadow treasurer Joe Hockey. However, the menu just started circulating around social media, days after PM Julia Gillard's controversial remark about Australian abortion laws.
Pm Julia Gillard said that the menu was "grossly and sexist and offensive." She pointed out that Mr. Brough is the incoming senior minister if Abbott won the elections. PM Gillard said that Mr. Brough should be dropped by the Opposition.
According to Ms. Gillard, "This is Tony Abbott's Liberals, this is what they're like and I think the real risk for Australia is if Mr. Abbott was ever Prime Minister it wouldn't be a question of what's on fundraising menus, we would see this lack of respect for women littered through all of his government policy documents."
She said that Mr. Abbott had been showing signs of a notorious behaviour with his jokes aimed at her. She recalled how Mr. Abbott stood next to a sexist sign about her and those hurtful jokes during Young Liberal event making fun about the death of her father.
Mr. Tony Abbott condemned the sexist menu saying, "Whether it is a tacky scatological menu out the front of a Liberal Party event, whether it is squalid jokes told at union conference, dinners with ministers present, whatever it is, I think we should be better than that. I think we should be appealing to every Australian's best self as we go into this election."
However, Mr. Abbott called PM Julia Gillard's appeal to drop Mr. Brough from his party as "ridiculous" for Mr. brough did not write the menu himself.
Mr. Kevin Rudd said the menu was a "snide, dirty, sexist trick. On the other hand, Mr. Joe Hockey who was present in the event said that he did not recall seeing such menu.
Mr. Hockey said, "I don't recall ever seeing any such menu. It is offensive and inappropriate whenever it was put out and it is now."
The man behind the controversial sexist menu was a businessman and restaurant owner. He said that the copy of the menu now circulating around social media was just a mock-up menu and was intended as "a joke, never for public distribution. Unfortunately a staff member saw the mock menu, and unbeknown to me posted it on Facebook."
In an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Ms. Eva Cox, founder of the Women's Economic Think Tank and Author of "leading Women" said that the gender war happening between the two officials "reminds me a bit of a Punch and Judy Show. Gillard knocks down Abbott, Abbott knocks down Gillard."
Meanwhile, former Victorian Labor Premier Joan Kirner expressed her solid support for PM Julia Gillard. She suggested that Ms. Gillard should do her best to make a debate between her and Mr. Abbott possible. Ms. Kirner suggested that the debate should focus on "equality, respect and inclusion of women."
