'Pokken Tournament' adds three new characters to the roster, with one more reveal coming this week
The hype for “Pokken Tournament” continues to intensify as a magazine in Japan called CoroCoro has confirmed that three new characters would be coming to the game: Garchomp, Braixen and Mewtwo. Another character is also set for a reveal on Jan. 15, so it looks like “Pokemon” fans are in for a treat this week.
Considering how Shadow Mewtwo was already announced for the game, the unveiling of a regular version of Mewtwo was inevitable. Still, if fans are okay with two versions of Pikachu in “Pokken Tournament,” there should be no problem with two Mewtwos as long as they play differently from each other.
Braixen and Garchomp are fairly exciting new additions to the game. An article from Destructoid is curious about how Braixen will play, considering that the character has both psychic and fire powers. Garchomp looks like a powerful brute and should be fun to use in fights.
An article from Comic Book has confirmed that Braixen will mostly focus on long-range attacks, but also has a staff for close-up attacks. Garchomp will have moves like “Dragon Rush” and “Sand Tomb” which should make him a big threat to the other Pokemon in the fighting game.
These characters join a number of other popular Pokemon in the game including Pikachu and Charizard, among others. It seems like the fighting game is trying to reach a good balance between old-school characters for veteran fans and new generation Pokemon for younger fans.
It’s a smart strategy, as new and old players will enjoy seeing their favorites beat the tar out of one another. Considering that 2016 is the 20th year of the “Pokemon” franchise, Nintendo couldn’t have picked a better year to release the fighting game. The company is also planning to release 3DS and 2DS bundles that come installed with the original GameBoy games.
“Pokken Tournament” currently has no official release date, but is scheduled for release on the arcades and the Nintendo Wii U. The game has already been confirmed for a Western release, so fans still have a reason to keep their Wii U before the new Nintendo console is announced.
