Pope Francis in Brazil: 'I Came to Meet Young People....From All Over the World'
The Pope travelled in an open car and left his bullet proof pope mobile behind. After getting bogged down in a traffic jam, he switched to an open air vehicle, so he could see the thousands who had flocked to see him.
"It was so amazing when he was selected, we just couldn't believe it. We cried and hugged one another," one devotee was quoted as saying in a report by The Associated Press. Adding, "I personally want to see if he's still the same man as simple and humble whom we all knew. I have faith that he's remained the same."
He drew a huge following since many were seeing Pope Francis for the first time since he took office in Vatican City.
"I came to meet young people coming from all over the world, drawn to the open arms of Christ the Redeemer," said Pope Francis.
The Pontiff's visit comes after a number of riots and demonstrations in Brazil. After the Pope left the scene, the police used tear gas to disburse the crowd. This is the latest demonstration voicing opposition to corruption in the government.
Pope Francis will return after a week-long visit to participate in the Youth Day festival sponsored by Roman Catholics.
"They want to find a refuge in his embrace, right near his heart to hear his call clearly and powerfully," said the Pope.
This is Pope Francis' first visit overseas since he was elected as Pope by the Vatican.
