Pope Francis was a No-Show at the Gala Classical Concert
Ever the unconventional, Francis, the head of the Roman Catholic Church, once again made a move that seemed to imply that he is not just another pope.
His recent last minute snub of the RAI National Symphony Orchestra concert at the Vatican last June 22 at which he was supposedly the guest of honour, took the cardinals by surprise. The newspaper Corriere della Sera reported that Pope Francis's action showed the kind of simple style he ought to be adapted by the church officials.
For Francis, bishops are not supposed to have the "mentality of a prince". This was his comment days before the concert.
The Pope had to attend to an "urgent commitment that cannot be postponed," was Francis's message as read by Archbishop Rino Fisichella. It was the reason the crowd of cardinals were given by to explain why the white papal armchair reserved for Francis will be left unused until the curtains close.
He was believed to be busy with matters concerning new appointment for the Curia, Vatican's central administration. Such administration was held accountable for some of the controversies during the leadership or Francis's successor.
An unofficial source was also quoted as saying that, "in Argentina, they probably knew not to arrange social events like concerts for him because he probably wouldn't go."
The former cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina is "still learning how to be pope and we are still learning how he wants to do it," the source opined.
Francis was elected as the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church or the Bishop of Rome last March 13. He succeeded Benedict the XVI who unexpectedly resigned on February 28 citing that his physical condition renders him unfit to deal with the demands of the position.
Since Francis's assumption of the papacy, it was evident that he prefers simplicity over excesses even if it means going against tradition.
For one, it has been reported that he opted to stay at the small suite at Domus Santa Marta in Vatican despite the uncomfortable heat of the summer instead of spending time at the opulent and spacious palace at Castel Gandolfo used by his successors.
Francis likewise sported a silver not gold papal ring.
He was also seen wearing black shoes instead of the traditional red pair.
While conservative Christians may be surprised if not displeased by the unconventional manner Francis chooses to lead the flock, perhaps one of the most important messages it echoes is the need for change. Amid the injustices, poverty, discrimination, corruption, abuse and other issues involving the faithful and even the church leaders themselves, it may be high time to re-evaluate our choices and change our ways for the better. It may not be easy but it can be done. We can take the cue from the leader of the Catholic Church himself.
