A nationwide survey of Australia's electricity power industry has shown that South Australians were unaware of applicable discounts offered by the electricity supply companies.

In the latest survey by the People Power, it was found that only a dismal number of South Australians apply or get to enjoy electricity power discounts compared with other users in the other states.

"There are lots and lots of people in South Australia who are not even aware that they can switch suppliers and get discounts," Lachlan Harris, co-founder of One Big Switch, said in AdelaideNow.

Australia is currently working into a concept known as One Big Switch, a next generation consumer network, established to build real consumer power.

Since its launch in Australia in July 2011, more than 100,000 power users have registered and thus have been profiled on their knowledge, usage and access to electricity discounts. From South Australia, only about 16,400 users have so far signed up. The cut-off signing date will be on July 15.

The dismal turnout so far of South Australian registrants reflect the state's poor knowledge of the applicable discounts offered by the electricity supply companies. According to the survey, the discounts enjoyed so far by South Australian power users were 1.36 per cent, whereas the national average is 1.94 per cent.

The low rate of discounts in South Australia suggested people were unaware of the discounting schemes and possibly paid their power consumption "in full, registered or rack price," AdelaideNow reported.

The survey likewise showed People Power registrants from South Australia have huge power bills, as much as $2,700 a year.

The same survey also revealed that in all of Australia, the 25,000 electricity power registrants from Victoria get to enjoy the biggest discounts, at 2.5 per cent discount, and raking only $2,110 on power annually.
