"Pretty Little Liars" (PLL) star Troian Bellisario, who plays the role of smart, overachieving, and perfectionist teenager, Spencer Hastings, recently admitted to self-harming in the past. Bellisario revealed that during her junior year in high school, she would punish herself by withholding food or by not going out with her friends.

28-year-old Bellisario, the daughter of producers Donald P. Bellisario and Deborah Pratt, spoke to Seventeen Magazine about the intimate details of her life, including her experiences when she was young.

"I started self-harming when I was a junior. I would withhold food or withhold going out with my friends, based on how well I did that day in school," said Bellisario in the Seventeen Magazine interview.

"I didn't know what was right and what was wrong, so I think I created this bizarre system of checks and balances to create order in my world. But it really backfired," she added.

Thankfully, her self-harming days are over and it didn't progress into something much worse, like a full blown eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia, or self-mutilation.

As the daughter of two Hollywood producers who are responsible for hit shows like "NCIS," "JAG," "Magnum P.I.," "Quantum Leap," "Family Guy" and "Battlestar Galactica," Bellisario has lived a fairly comfortable life, much like her character Spencer Hastings in PLL. However, Bellisario thinks that she is very different from the role she is portraying and that she sometimes feels out-of-place in the hit ABC Family mystery-thriller TV series.

"Sometimes I feel like I'm trying too hard, like I don't belong. I just look around at Lucy [Hale], Shay [Mitchell], and Ashley [Benson], and I'm just like, Why am I on this show? Sometimes I've felt like a fraud. Like, I'm not like these other girls - I don't dress like that and don't know how to do my hair," Bellisario confessed to Seventeen Magazine.

But, Troian makes sure that she always goes back to herself at the end of the day, especially after taping for PLL.

"The minute I'm off that stage, I try to get as "me" as possible. I do that by piling on my black eyeliner, and I put on my ripped tights. Dressing like myself again helps," added Bellisario.

She credits her family, friends and loved ones for making her happy. She's also grateful for all her blessings and thinks she is very lucky that's why she doesn't take it for granted.

Troian's "Pretty Little Liars" co-star and close friend Lucy Hale, who plays Aria Montgomery on the show, is very supportive of her and even tweeted about Troian's interview on Seventeen Magazine. Check out her tweet below.
