Prince Harry introduces Meghan Markle to his ‘favourite Aussie’

Prince Harry has introduced wife Meghan Markle to a very special lady in his life. The British prince has called his American wife to meet his “favourite Aussie” in Sydney on Tuesday.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are currently in Australia for their first official overseas tour as a couple. On Tuesday, they met with thousands of Australians outside the Sydney Opera House. It was also their first walkabout since revealing that they were expecting their first child.

While the couple tried to give each well-wisher their attention, one got more than just a few seconds of polite smile and thanks. Daphne Dunne, 98, got the Duke beelining for her after he spotted her in the crowd. Harry, 34, knelt down to his favourite Aussie, who was sitting on her wheelchair, to give her a hug.

“I was looking for you earlier and hoped you’d be here. It’s so good to see you again,” he told her. He then looked around from his kneeling position to scan the crowd for Meghan.

The Duchess then came over, approaching the nonagenarian and hugging her as well. “I’m so glad I got to meet you. Harry has told me all about you and your special bond. It’s so lovely you came to see us. Thank you,” she told Daphne.

Daphne indeed has a special bond with Harry. She first met the 34-year-old royal in 2015 when she received the posthumous Victoria Cross award for her first husband, Lieutenant Albert Chowne, who died at age 25 in 1945, just a year after they had married. She reunited with him in June 2017 when Harry visited Australia to launch the Invictus Games. Harry had instantly remembered Daphne, who had been waiting in the pouring rain for her prince, giving her a kiss on the cheek.

“Hopefully next time we’ll have our little one with us,” Meghan added after accepting the flowers and cards from the war widow.

Harry also commented on Daphne’s new look, saying, “I’ve seen your shoes, they’re very cool. Have you dyed your hair a shade of pink?”

Daphne told AAP that she was thrilled to have finally met Meghan.

“She said she had heard all about me. She’s so beautiful,” Daphne said. “I wished them well with the baby on the way and said this is what Harry has been waiting for for so long.”
