Although many things about the arrival of the Prince of Cambridge was full of convention, like the town cry er announcing his birth and the easel displaying a more formal announcement at Westminster, Prince William decided to take things into his own hands when it came to telling the queen about his baby boy.

William decided beforehand that he will call the Queen of England himself once his baby was born. The normal procedure would be to send a formal notice. The gesture from William is revealing of the strong bond that William shares with his grandmother.

The special attention to the Queen, normally privy to such private information before anyone else, appears to be a telling sign of a 'mother figure' in William's life after having gone through the tragic death of his mother, Princess Di.

Her Highness is assumed to have played a role in nurturing William and Harry after Prince Charles married Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall. As the Queen is growing older and taking on her own repertoire of engagements, she too was concerned that the baby's arrival would be delayed.

She was scheduled to take a vacation this week and fortunately the newborn Prince arrived just in the nick of time. She is also looking forward to having William's son call his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II.

“The Duke intends to tell the Queen himself,” a source from the palace told The Sunday Times. It was predecided that after the arrival of the baby, a call to a handful f friends was also in line with the royal couple's plans. The news would be passed on to Prime Minister David Cameron among others, said the paper. Another close friend of the royal couple who will also receive a phone call is the Archbishop of Canterbury.
