Hugh Jackman starrer "Prisoners" stormed the box-office over the weekend. According to latest estimates, the movie topped the chart with $21.4 million weekend collection.

The movie is a thriller produced by the Warner Bros. Other stars in the movie include Jake Gyllenhaal who plays a small town detective. The R-rated adult drama was made in around $46 million. The movie is pretty long, according to Hollywood standards. It runs for about 2 hours and a half. Denis Villeneuve is the director of the film.

The movie plays with allegorical elements in the story which is about 2 young girls, who belong to working class families, getting kidnapped. Jackson plays the character of a father who does not hesitate to push moral standards for securing justice. The movie has mostly received positive reviews from film critics.

It was predicted earlier that the movie would collect at least $20 million at the weekend. Strong reviews from critics must have helped the movie come up to the expectation. According to Rotten Tomatoes reviews, 79 per cent critics have already recommended the movie.

The Warner Bros. Distribution Head Dan Fellman has informed that 74 per cent of the audience belong to those under 50. About 8 per cent of the people are under 18. According to Mr Fellman, the movie has striking resemblance with the Academy award winning film Argo, produced by Warner Bros. Just like Argo, Prisoners too had its premiere at the Telluride Film Festival and later at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Paul Dergarabedian, who is a box-office analyst at Hollywood.com, said that it could be a change as Prisoners was getting sound response. Movies that belonged to adult drama genre were earlier thought to have lost its glory, he said.

The estimated sales of ticket, according to Hollywood.com, between Friday and Sunday at the U.S. and Canadian box-office show Prisoners top the chart while Insidious: Chapter 2 stands at number 3 and The Family at number 3.
