Concerns about overheating that could lead to potential fire and burn hazards have prompted Hewlett-Packard to recall over six million power cords from the United States and Canada.

Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) made the voluntary recall after 29 users reported to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission that the cords burned or melted. The incident has resulted in two claims of minor burns as well as 13 claims of minor property damage.

The recalled item was specifically the AC power cord marked "LS-15" which was distributed with Hewlett-Packard and Compaq notebook and mini notebook computers, as well as with AC adapter-powered accessories such as docking stations.

The commission advised customers to immediately stop using the power cord and contact Hewlett-Packard to order a free replacement. An unidentified source quoted by the CBC said a Chinese firm manufactured the cords.

About 5.6 million power cords will be recalled in the United States, along with 446,700 in Canada.

An unidentified Hewlett-Packard spokesman from Australia told The Australian the country will also be affected by the massive product recall. It was not specified how many cords will be pulled out from Australia.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said the AC power cords were sold together with the notebook and mini notebook computers and accessories at computer and electronics stores, authorized dealers and online at www.hp.com worldwide from September 2010 through June 2012 for about $500 to $1500.

This isn't the first time that Hewlett-Packard will be carrying out recalls due to defective products.

From 2009-2011, it undertook a massive recall of lithium-Ion batteries for HP and Compaq Notebook computers, still because of overheating problems that could lead to fire and burn hazards.
