A total of five million baby strollers will be recalled by Graco from off the market in the United States, Canada and Mexico, following reports of fingertip amputation risks.

The recall involved eight designs of strollers, the Aspen, Breeze, Capri, Cirrus, Glider, Literider, Sierra and Sterling that have been sold from 2000 through2014. The affected models are single occupancy, with a spring-loaded fold lock on each side and a one-hand fold release mechanism on the handle.

In Canada, a total of 202,000 will be pulled out. About 4.7 million strollers will be recalled in the United States and 10,300 in Mexico.

Health Canada said the recall pointed to a folding hinge on the sides of the stroller that can pinch a child's fingers, posing a laceration or amputation risk. There have been 11 injury reports, including six fingertip amputations, four partial-fingertip amputations and one finger laceration, all in the United States. No injuries have been reported so far in Canada and Mexico.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, or CPSC, instructed owners of the strollers to contact Graco for a repair kit that includes hinge covers. Graco said the repair kits should be available at the start of December 2014.

"While waiting for a repair kit, caregivers should exercise extreme care when unfolding the stroller to be certain that the hinges are firmly locked before placing a child in the stroller," the CPSC said. "Caregivers are advised to immediately remove the child from a stroller that begins to fold to keep their fingers from the side hinge area."
