PS4 & Women: The New Trend in Next-gen Gaming?
Ever since its February event, Sony has been preparing the next-gen PS4 to go beyond its usual make demographics so that it will also cater to female gamers.
With the new features that the PS4 offers, The Sun reports that Andrew House of Sony Europe feels that aside from women, the PS4 can also tap families. In particular, he talked about how features like the DualShock 4's touchpad can enable gamers to bring the ease of gaming found in touch screen mobiles to the PS4.
But it doesn't stop there, because beyond female gamers are also female developers, who are also topping Sony's list in terms of the demographics that they want to tap for the PS4.
"We are not going down the route of making the console pink," said House as quoted by Digital Trends. "I think the key is to have people-and increasingly, women-with different sensibilities creating different games. It's not all about shoot 'em up games."
Recently, Sony has announced that it doesn't want to limit its next-gen console to just shooter games, considering the advancement that the console is aiming to deliver.
Sony Worldwide president Shuhei Yoshida has even said that the Knack game shown during the event was intentional in order to showcase to developers that they want diversity with the games for PS4.
"It's just natural for us to enhance the core technology and performance of the hardware, but it's not the hardware that's the biggest focus," said Yoshida to GameSpot.
The Workshop: Riding on the Sony PS4 bandwagon
In their website, The Workshop has recently announced that they will be developing for the PS4. According to Push Square, another bit of news involves their newly hired creative director in the form of Laralyn McWilliams.
"We are pleased and excited to have Laralyn leading our creative team," said Chris Busse, The Workshop Entertainment, Inc. general manager, in a press statement. "We're confident that her proven abilities will enrich projects we currently have in development and help guide the focus of future work."
Considering Sony's most recent slant about having more women become part of the gaming industry and development, is this a step towards that direction with The Workshop?
However, according to Push Square, the potential game that The Workshop is rumored to be developing is a first-person shooter game, the field that Sony has been quoted to say that should not be the only focus of developers.
On another interesting note, McWilliams is well-known for her experience in MMO, simulations, and strategies, aside from first-person shooter games, so it's still anyone's bet on which game she'll be taking the lead on.
