PS4 and Xbox 720: Potentially Priced Lower than Current-Gen Consoles?
It seems that the PS4 will be taking some lessons from its predecessor, and will be applying fairly new strategies to sell the PS4 to a much bigger market.
If Sony had released two versions of the PS3-one at a lower price of $499 that has lower memory, and one that is $499 for a 60GB model.
But potentially the big news for the PS4 is the possibility of a subsidised console, to make it more affordable and appealing to those who are not yet into the gaming sector.
PS4: A subsidised console?
According to GameSpot, analyst Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities, suggested that a subsidised version of the PS4 may be the push needed where the Wii U price cut may have failed. It's also a potential answer to how the future consoles can still compete with the price cut of the Wii U.
"Part of that vision [for the PS4] is we have created a console absolutely focused on gamers-and we want that to be gamers in the broadest sense as well," said Sony Worldwide Studios Vice President Michael Denny in a statement to Ars Technica.
Lower prices for the next-gen consoles
Even the Xbox 720 is said to be looking at lower prices, which can be the start of the price tag drop race between the two competing next-gen consoles, reports The Examiner.
In fact, a subsidised method of acquiring the console may not be far off, even for the PS4's competition.
This could mean that both the PS4 and the Xbox 720 may be looking at pulling down the price tags. With the Xbox 720,The Examiner adds that this can be in the form of bundling it with its other upcoming devices, such as the Xbox cable TV. But confirmations as to whether this kind of package is yet to officially announced by Microsoft.
"We listen and learn and take the judgment from every console launch we ever have and we have to be informed by what the strengths of our PlayStation 3 system have been, but also the challenges of that," said Denny.
For the mean time, going by the analysis of the PS3's trend and the possible trend for the PS4, it seems likely that the PS4 can be offered at a lower price. However, it's also possible to see a Sony doing price adjustments, reports Ars Technica, but expect the time when the console hits the market to be the most crucial ones.
