Pub Dining in NSW: Where to Go - Pub Food Guide 2014
Hungry? Go to a pub. There are a number of great dining places across the state and they're not your usual restaurant.
What people usually look for in a pub is good beer, a great atmosphere, friendly staff, and a crowd that just fits one's fancy but what about pub grub? According to Good Food, based on Pub Food Guide 2014, the best place to go is Woolwich Pier Hotel. The harbourside place has a pub that used to be a three-schooner winner but recently took top honours in terms of service. It has kid-friendly features which means you can bring the kids and the menu is reportedly nice. The food is typical pub grub - you get burgers, confit duck and even high tea for daytime goers.
Experts in the industry say that pubs are no longer just for adults who want to get themselves a bottle of ice cold beer. The pub industry is starting to become more family friendly especially in NSW.
While the old timers are adapting to pub scene changes i.e. including family friendly or kid friendly features, Pub Food Guide 2014 awarded the Best Newcomer award to Marrickville's The Henson. According to the guide editor of Pub Food Guide 2014, The Henson "has a playground out the back".
Some pubs according to sources even have clowns now to entertain the pub-going kids.
Although not every NSW resident is happy about the emerging trend, pubs are truly putting themselves out there so that they can cater to families. Years ago, sources say that pub grub wasn't as good. Austin said about Salmon being served in a pub, "A few years ago it would have been cooked to death".
According to Good Food, the Best Family Friendly pub in NSW is the pub at The Belrose Hotel.
While many pubs are making changes in their menu, some are sticking to pub classics. This includes schnitzels and burgers but many pub chefs are reportedly raising the bar now. Some are even making some ingredients in-house. Like pubs in many parts of the UK, house-made pickles can now be spotted in NSW pubs.
