Putin, Obama Rift Can Start Armageddon, Soviet Warns Icy US-Russia Relationship to Prompt New War
Tension with the United States and Russia intensifies with the West trying to impose more sanctions on Vladimir Putin's administration. The Soviet argues its Ukraine decisions as justifiable but continuous provocation from the US may only lead to an Armageddon-like scenario. World leaders warn that if Russia's isolation continues, tensions may eventually lead to a new Cold or Nuclear War.
America's attempt to call the shots on everything can be a very big problem according to former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. He has been as a known personality from the Cold War and has his fair share of Soviet dealings. As Russia and the US continue to battle it out on the global stage, the former official warns that further escalation of conflict can turn into war. In an exclusive interview with the TIME, Gorbachev points out: "Are we in the middle of a new Cold War? Indeed we are."
This is not the first time that someone called out the rising tension between the two countries. In fact, political figures around the world warn that if the US continues to isolate Russia then it may prompt the latter to engage in more dangerous means. The Daily Mail's report supports this saying that the "icy" relationship might as well lead to Armageddon unless their leaders to decide to end the rising rift. The Mail's report on Gorbachev discusses the official's warning about fearing "terrible consequences" in the long run. The last few months have been putting a strain on international relations and the level of trust between countries.
The Daily Mail quotes Gorbachev further: "Judging by the recent declarations, diplomats of both sides are preparing for many long years of confrontation. This is extremely dangerous."
Following the Soviet collapse, Gorbachev says that the US "tried to turn us into some kind of backwater, a province." As with Putin's recent series of decisions, this is something that the country cannot turn a blind eye on. Gorbachev tells TIME: "Our nation could not let that pass. It's not just about pride. It's about a situation where people speak to you however they want, impose limitations, and so on. It's America calling the shots in everything!"
On a final note, the Soviet official recommends the United States and Russia to consider holding a summit covering a broad agenda. There should no preliminary conditions. A peace deal should be enforced while sanctions should be dealt with properly instead of piled up.
