Quake in India, Nepal Kills 18, Injures 100
A magnitude 6.9 earthquake rocked northeastern India and Nepal Sunday killing at least 18 people and injuring 100 others.
The 6:10 p.m. tremor was followed by three strong aftershocks with magnitudes 5.7, 5.3 and 4.6 30 minutes later, according to Indian seismologists. The quake was felt as far away as Kolkata
The quake's epicenter was located near the Nepal village of Namche Bazar, some 68 kilometers northwest of Gangtok, the main town of the Indian state of Sikkim.
Seven people died and 60 were injured in Sikkim by collapsing homes.
In the Darjeeling district of West Bengal state, three died. Bihar state reported two deaths.
Rescuers from the Indian Army are searching for people under collapsed buildings in Sikkim's main town of Gangtok, Darjeeling and Kalimpong, a town in West Bengal.
Five people died in Nepal, including three who were pinned to death from the collapse of a brick wall outside the British embassy in Kathmandu.
Power and communication lines were cut in Sikkim, Darjeeling and Kalimpong. Landslides also occurred in different parts of Sikkim while sidewalks cracked and two major roads collapsed.
The earthquake was felt as far away as New Delhi, India's capital, Bangladesh and Tibet in China. In Kolkata and North Bengal, panic-striken residents and shoppers ran out of shaking homes, shopping malls and multiplexes.
Nepalese lawmakers ran out of the parliament building and into the parking lot. They returned 15 minutes later and resumed session.
