Marco Lavoie ate his German-shepherd after it saved him from a bear. Mr Lavoie was left by his camp with neither food nor his canoe. His pet dog, however, did not leave him, and it even drove off a bear that came for him. Nevertheless, he became so frantic for food that he killed his dog with a stone only to eat it for survival. When Mr Lavoie was rescued, he was just a few days away from death, according to experts. Mr Lavoie, 44, was rescued from the freezing wilderness of Quebec on Wednesday.

Mr Lavoie lost about 40 kg and could not even eat or speak. He was put on rehydration drips at the Matagami Hospital. He is considered to be in a critical condition. The complete story of Mr Lavoie is yet to be known. On the other hand, it was known that he started trekking in July 2013 through the Nottaway River country with the help of his canoe. It is about 500 miles north-west of Montreal.

Andre Diamond lives on an island that is near the Nottaway. He apparently warned Mr Lavoie regarding the river due to it cruel and rapid currents. He said that Mr Lavoie had not cared enough as he said that he was not scared. Mr Lavoie was also told that he should not travel on that river alone. Adventurers went there more than 30 years before. However, they never returned from their adventure, he said. Mr Lavoie was left with no food due to the bear raiding the camp.

The family of Mr Lavoie started worrying on Oct 21 after he had not successful return from his trekking trip. The Quebec adventurer could not be found due to hostile weather in the dense forest even after eight days after the authorities were informed of his not returning. It was only after did a helicopter crew notice his fragile physique that he was rescued. However, the helicopter could find a suitable place to land and the officer trekked over a mile to rescue him on a stretcher.
