Queensland Premier Forecasts Lower Banana Prices Due to Bumper Harvest
Queensland's banana industry is recovering after the Australian state was flooded in summer. Queensland Premier Anna Bligh forecast lower banana prices in the coming weeks from the peak of $15 a kilogramme due to expected bumper harvest from North Queensland.
"This is welcome news for banana lovers across the country as I know there has been national discussion of banana prices since Cyclone Yasi," Ms Bligh said in a statement.
Current prices range from $7.99 a kilo at Annerley Fruit Barn on Ipswich Road to $10.98 from Lady Finger and Cavendish varieties sold online by Coles. The prices are expected to go down by up to 50 per cent from present levels as supply meets consumer demand and production peaks in November.
Yasi damaged banana crops when it battered Australia in early February, particularly the growing areas of Innisfail and Cardwell. The Australian Banana Growers' Council estimated that 75 per cent of the national industry was affected by the cyclone. Worst hit was Queensland which had 95 per cent of its banana crops destroyed.
Banana growing is a $450 million industry in Australia.
After the cyclone, banana prices were steady for four weeks due to sufficient stocks in storage, but wholesale prices jumped to $115 a carton from the yearly average of $24 a carton in March when supply ran out.
