The Queensland Government will be resuming properties to build a new train station at Yeerongpilly on Brisbane's southside.

Transport Minister Rachel Nolan explained the resumed properties will be part of the cross-river rail tunnel project. Nolan said, “It's proposed that the new station would be located on the eastern side of the existing station... It would be the first cross-river rail station trains use before entering the north-south tunnel, which is expected to be about 10 kilometres long.”

According to the transport minister, 33 houses, 72 units, and 20 industrial properties will be resumed on Wilkie Street, and at Ipswich Road at Moorooka. The sites at Moorooka and Fairfield were rejected based on a number of considerations.

Nolan disclosed that “The number of properties that were impacted (was one issue, and) cost was of course a factor” in the alternative sites.

A funding decision on the project is expected next year but Yeerongpilly residents are planning to rally this weekend to protest the project on Brisbane's southside.

Opposition Transport Spokeswoman Fiona Simpson claimed the residents wanted transparency. “There's a lot of concern that this process has been shrouded in secrecy,” she said.

Residents were also reported to be concerned of the prices of the properties.
