Australia takes pride in its secular approach as it has maintained healthy relation with several countries all over the world, including India. However, there have been racist attacks in recent past, which is a shameful attempt to malign the image of the nation by its own citizens.

July 2013

An Australian couple is going to spend the next nine months of their life in jail as they attacked an Indian taxi driver. The Sikh driver, Jagroop Singh, suffered malicious and unprovoked attack by Angeline Sollitt and Michael Arbouin.

Mr. Singh was punched and racially abused as his turban was ripped off. Justice Southwood finds it disgraceful to touch or insult the turban of the Sikhs as the head as well as the turban is sacred for them.

June 2013

Another racist attack involved Himanshu Goyal who was supposedly assaulted. The Indian entrepreneur, who is the owner of a restaurant in Ballarat situated near Melbourne, got verbally abused and beaten up by a gang of teenagers. Goyal was also punched on his face.

Ballarat Police personnel Matt Hayes informed that the incident was under investigation. The police was in the process of watching CCTV footage. The police hoped tracking the attackers down soon.

December 2012

There was an allegation of a racial attack on a bus when two Indian women were attacked. Apparently, a strongly built woman slapped the young Indian women while she abused them racially.

The incident was condemned by the Ted Baillieu, the Victorian Premier. He termed the incident "sickening", "disgraceful" and "contemptible". He also termed racism as cowardly as well as illegal.

June 2012

Another taxi driver of India origin was attacked as well as abused as his car got smashed with baseball bats by a gang of men. The attackers got hold of Harpreet Singh who was driving through Sunshine suburb in Melbourne.

Mr. Singh's car got rammed from the back as another car blocked the front side. He found his experience terrifying as the attackers smashed the window and started hitting him.
