Struggling with injuries in the second half of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) season, Rafael Nadal is set to play at the 2015 Mubadala World Tennis Championship (MWTC) according to tournament’s organisers.

The development was reported by The National, a United Arab Emirates-based website, which stated that IMG, the organiser for the Abu Dhabi tennis tournament, has gotten commitment from Nadal’s camp that the Spaniard will play in the tourney slated from Jan. 1 to 3, 2015 at the International Tennis Centre at Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E.

“The latest [with Nadal] is that we’re in touch with his team on a regular basis. He just played in China and that means he is back and playing, which is great news.” Greg Sproule, Mid-East head of IMG, was quoted saying in the report. “We’re in touch with his manager Carlos Costa, who has said he is coming to Abu Dhabi. We have to rely on what he is saying and we pressed him quite hard in terms of is he coming, and he said yes and said put me down and quote me that he is coming.”

Nadal however busted out early in both tournaments in China. He lost to compatriot Felicano Lopez, 3-6, 6-7 (6) in the second round of the 2014 Shanghai Masters and to Slovakian Martin Klizan, 7-6 (7), 4-6, 3-6 in the quarterfinals of the 2014 China Open in Beijing. Nadal was struggling with appendicitis during the tourney in Shanghai.

If Nadal is healthy in time for the tourney in Abu Dhabi, he’ll join other top players like Novak Djokovic (Serbia), Stan Wawrinka (Switzerland), Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (France), Gael Monfils (France) and Andy Murray (Great Britain) among many others.

With two flops in China and continuing struggle with the injury bug, Nadal has fallen to world no. 3 in the ATP rankings with Roger Federer (Switzerland) stealing the no. 2 spot. Djokovic is still comfortably ahead of the field for the best player in tennis at this point of the ATP season.

Doctors are still evaluating Nadal's injuries and has the Spanish star's camp is yet to announce if he'll be playing the rest of 2014.
