Tomas Berdych is not too confident about anyone’s chances—including his own-- of unseating the best players in the world atop the tennis rankings. Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are on the top of their game and it would take a special effort by anyone to beat them according to Czech Republic’s ace.

"There are three guys staying up there. There was one change with Stan getting up there by winning the Slam at the beginning of the year. You really need to win a Slam to get there. Stan had a great run in Australia,” Berdych said via an Agence France Presse (AFP) report.

“Then Rafa and Novak. Nothing really changed after that. I wouldn't say it's really open there. It was just the moment Stan jumped up and took it. I think it's back to the old lines like it was before."

Berdych might have stated the obvious or just plainly looked at the recent success of Djokovic and Nadal in recent Grand Slam tournaments. Since 2011, the Serbian and Spaniard have won 11 of the 15 available majors titles; Djokovic has six to Nadal’s 5 and the four other titles were shared by Great Britain’s Andy Murray (2); and Switzerland’s Roger Federer and recently, Stanislas Wawrinka.

The continued impressive domination by the pair is reflected in the current ATP Rankings where they own the no. 1 and no. 2 slots and has a convincing lead over their rivals.

Berdych is currently behind the Swiss pair at no. 5 but has never cracked the top 4 in his career.

"It's really tough. It's hard to explain with better words," Berdych admitted in the same report. "I'm trying to do my best, working hard for that every day. To keep that position for a few years is a good result for me. Just to hang in there is not easy at all. That's the baseline to have a chance to get closer.”

The 28-year-old Czech is currently playing at the 2014 Citi Open in Washington, USA where he is seeded first. Berdych is using the tournament as his warm-up tournament for the bigger 2014 US Open set from August 25 to September 8, 2014.
