Rafael Nadal To Play In Basel, Paris, And London; Will Undergo Surgery For Appendicitis At The End Of The Year
After having been diagnosed with appendicitis, Rafael Nadal has said that he is still set to participate in the last tournaments of the current tennis season. He said he will have to undergo surgery at the end of the year.
Nadal played his first official matches at the China Open. It was the first time that he has played since hurting his wrist. He played well in the tournament but suffered a quarterfinals exit.
Next up for Nadal was the 2014 Shanhai Rolex Masters, but he also crashed out early in the tournament. He lost to Feliciano Lopez in the second round of the Shanghai Masters, 6-3 7-6 (8-6).
BBC Sport reports that Nadal complained about an abdominal pain on Oct. 5. He reportedly took antibiotic prior his second round match against Lopez, which somehow eased the stomach pains but made him felt "dizzy." Nonetheless, Nadal has his eyes fixed on the last tournaments of the season. According to BBC Sport, Nadal will have surgery done "at the end of the year."
"Now there remains three more tournaments for me," Nadal said. "My thoughts is to continue with Basel, Paris, and London," Nadal added.
The Swiss Indoors Basel will run from Oct. 20 to Oct. 26. Other confirmed contestants in the Basel tournament are Roger Federer, Stanislas Wawrinka, Milos Raonic, Grigor Dimitrov, Ernests Gulbis, Dominic Thiem, and defending champion Juan Martin del Potro. The BNP Paribas Masters in Paris, on the other hand, will be held from Oct. 27 to Nov. 2 with participating players, namely, Federer, Wawrinka, Raonic, Tomas Berdych, Novak Djokovic, David Ferrer, and Kei Nishikori. Lastly, the Barclays Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour Finals will be from Nov. 9 to Nov. 16. So far, only Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal have qualified for the World Tour finals in London.
Nadal is currently 46-9 this season. He has won four titles in Doha, Rio de Janeiro, Madrid, and Roland Garros. He ranks second in the world, but his second round defeat in Shanghai Masters has reportedly put his ATP rank in jeopardy. Federer is expected to beat him for World No. 2.
