Randy Jackson Not Coming Back For 'American Idol' Season 14
After being with "American Idol" for 13 seasons, Randy Jackson is not coming back for the 14th one, not as judge nor as a mentor. The show is currently looking for a new mentor.
Randy Jackson has been with "American Idol" from its infancy, with judges Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul, but has now decided that it's time to leave for good the singing competition that started it all. While he decided to leave on the 12th season as one of the judges, he was asked to return to be a mentor on the 13th season during the Rush Week, replacing Jimmy Iovine.
Randy told Deadline that after 13 seasons, he feels that this is the perfect time for him to leave. He said he could not be more proud of how the show progressed, as it had discovered some of the most incredible artists today. He also thinks that "American Idol" can be touted as one of the most successful television shows ever. For him, the show started it all. Randy is set to devote his time and efforts next on producing TV and film projects, as well as managing more artists through his company Dream Merchant 21 Entertainment.
The several companies behind the iconic show--Fox, Fremantle Media North America and 19 Entertainment--issued a joint statement in regard to the judge and mentor's official departure from the show. "Randy has been such an integral part of 'American Idol' since Day 1, both as a judge and as a mentor," the statement reads. "He's provided great advice and support, shaping the success of so many Idols we have discovered over the years. We wish him all the best in his next chapter," the networks added.
Fox also mentioned that Randy would always be part of the Idol franchise and that he's welcome to visit anytime. His departure would mean that Ryan Seacrest is the only returning pioneer cast in the upcoming season.
For season 14, Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban, and Harry Connick Jr are all set to return as judges. The show is expected to look for a new mentor that would fill the post Randy just vacated.
