Raven Symone Hates Labels Especially 'Gay' And 'African American'
Raven Symone may be out and proud of her relationship with a woman from the start, but she tells Oprah Winfrey now that she does not want to be labeled "gay" at all. This does not mean she's less proud to be who she is and what she is though. She also shared that being gay and her hate feeling towards the label, was something she knew even before she reaches puberty. It's not the only label she's not comfortable with too, as she said she does not like being labeled "African American" as well.
When the Supreme Court ruled that the ban on same sex marriage is unconstitutional back in August 2013, one of celebrities who tweeted how happy and proud she was of the decision was the famous Disney star, Raven. She did not mince words, saying with the decision, she can now get married because she's in a happy relationship with a woman. It shocked many, but soon the words gay and Raven are always uttered in one sentence. Apparently, the "That's So Raven" star does not like the very much even though she associated with being gay since she was young.
"I knew when I was, like, 12," the actress and singer at 28, recalled. "I was looking at everything." Still, the actress cautioned, "I don't want to be labeled 'gay.' I want to be labeled 'a human who loves humans.'" Not that is is that different from what most gays want, as being labeled gay often boxes a person in or with any other labels.
Raven shared that she feels the same way with the label "African American." I'm tired of being labeled," she said to Oprah Winfrey "I'm an American. I'm not an African American; I'm an American." Oprah Winfrey was more shocked with this statement than anything else, which Raven tried to explain. She said that she connected with every race and culture there is, so it's hard to be boxed under one label. She'll go with the label of "American" as a result, because it's the melting pot of culture. Well, that's a nicer way of explaining it.
Aside from labels, Raven is also known to hate airing her life in public and then crying about scandals when they happen (like Lindsay Lohan). Her parents taught her better than that, she says.
