All eyes are on Samsung as the South Korean tech giant releases on Sept 4 its Galaxy Gear smartwatch. In its review of the upcoming device, Computerworld pointed out that more than a timepiece, the gadget would offer a wide range of sensors and enough horsepower to put to shame midrange smartphones.

Contrary to earlier rumours that the unboxing of the smartwatch would be in Berlin, Germany, a blogger by the name of Om Malik, cited by Computerworld, said there will be a Berlin and New York launches.

But more interesting that the two simultaneous launch dates are details that the timepiece-cum-computer would have different variations, featuring square screens with OLED displays measuring 2.5 inches diagonally. It would be powered by a dual core processor. It would have a camera in the strip and tiny speakers in the clasp as well as near field communications to permit bump-to-sync and authenticate and Bluetooth 4.0 LE to connect to smartphones.

But a second source cited by the tech paper, Chris Ziegler, emphasis the device is not a phone but works with phones. The old Motorola actually released in 2011 its version of a smartwatch called MOTOACTV, while Sony also rolled out its Smartwatch series.

Other leaked details include a 1.5GHz dual-core Samsung Exynos 4212 CPU, ARM Mali-400 MP4 GPI, 1GB RAM, 2 megapixel camera and 320x320 1.67-inch AMOLED screen.

Because of its advanced features, the Galaxy Gear has been compared to detective Dick Tracy's timepiece.
