Rebel Wilson Talks About Getting Turned Away From Clubs, Refusing To Pull ‘Reese Witherspoon’ Card
Australian actress Rebel Wilson is pretty recognisable these days after starring in several Hollywood films and hosting the MTV Movie Awards 2013. But the bubbly 27-year-old admitted that she’s still far from being famous.
Rebel cited an incident in which was almost turned away from her Pitch Perfect co-star Anna Kendrick’s birthday party by a bouncer who didn’t recognise her.
“Anna Kendrick was having her birthday party there [at Hollywood hotspot Skybar], and it was a fancy place. So I get there with Hana Mae Lee from Pitch Perfect, and I’ve got a birthday gift so I’m clearly going to the party, and this big huge bouncer wouldn’t even look us in the face,” she told Cosmopolitan magazine.
“We were like, ‘Hi.’ And then two models came and he let them in.”
When asked if she pulled the “Do you know who I am” card, she replied, laughing, “I didn’t pull the Reese Witherspoon,” referring to the American actress’ infamous arrogant words when her husband was arrested for driving while intoxicated.
The bouncer eventually let them in, though, when they gave their name and he referred to his list of invited persons.
The NSW native has created a new ABC sitcom titled Super Fun Night. In the series, she will star as Kimmie, a lawyer whose night outs usually end in disaster. She doesn’t have to look very far for inspiration to her writing since she incorporates her own experiences in real life into the show.
“I’ll often use my real stuff in my writing because it comes across as more authentic. There’s a scene where my dress rips, and something like that happened when I first came to America,” she told the magazine.
“I got set up on a lunch with Jason Segel. He was the first Hollywood person that I got to have lunch with and chat about life with or whatever. So I thought I’ll try to look my best, and I wore my best leather jacket. When I sat down, a sharp edge on the chair snagged my jacked, and it just ripped.
“I was devastated but trying to hide it because I didn’t want to ruin the lunch. I’m always ripping clothing. It’s so embarrassing.”
Rebel had a small but memorable role in the Judd Apatow film Bridesmaids, and had joined the ensemble cast What to Expect When You’re Expecting in 2011.
In the same year, she was cast in the film Pitch Perfect, which had earned her various award nominations and wins.
Her new show Super Fun Night will premiere in the U.S. in October.
