Recent scientific research partially funded by the Danish Dairy Research Foundation, discovered that eating cheese may help individuals to lose weight. The study, published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, explained the phenomenon behind what the authors termed as “cheese metabolism.”

The researchers conducted the study by obtaining urine and faecal samples of 15 men, who had a milk-and-cheese-diet for two weeks. These men did not consume any other types of dairy products during the study period.

It was found that men who ate cheese (or milk) during the time being had a significantly different bacterial composition in their gut. They were said to have more increased levels of the compound butyrate, which is an anti-inflammatory fatty acid that can boost the production of energy. Furthermore, the American Diabetes Association said in a study in 2009 that butyrate is said to enhance metabolism, maintain the levels of body fat and generally prevent obesity.

Despite the findings of their research, the authors said that the public should not rush into purchasing and consuming cheese for weight loss purposes. The “French paradox,” as labelled by the authors, said it is still with balanced diet which the French people still maintain today that such study results surfaced.
