Red Sox Listening To Trade Offers As Revamp Looms
The Boston Red Sox are bleeding so a changeup from within may be following soon. For now, nothing has been set in stone although the latest reports claim that Boston is at least listening to offers from other MLB teams.
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Red Sox are considering deals for some of their veterans. That list includes five-time All-Star J.D. Martinez, starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi, and catcher Christian Vasquez.
It should be noted that these players are impending free agents, yet another reason why trading them is being considered by the Red Sox.
There will be one player in the form of Xander Bogaerts, who will reportedly be staying.
But his tenure could come to a halt, considering he could opt out of his deal with the Red Sox this season.
The possible changes or moves are anticipated with the fortunes of the Red Sox freefalling.
Things have not gone well for them since July 5, an 8-4 loss at the hands of the Tampa Bay Rays.
As of Sunday, July 31, the Red Sox tote a 50-51 record in the American League East.
Boston is, however, just four games behind the Rays for the third and final AL Wild Card spot as of this writing.
Regardless of what happens to their MLB campaign, it seems apparent that Boston needs to retool its roster as they have been losing games and the hard decision of having to part with some of their best available talents may have to be done.
In the case of Martinez, he is hitting .289 (.818 OPS) with nine home runs and 38 RBI.
Meanwhile, Vazquez has posted eight homers, 40 RBI, and a .280 batting average (.754 OPS).
On the other hand, the 32-year-old Eovaldi has gone 4-3 with a 4.43 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and 80 strikeouts in 81.1 innings (15 starts).
Among the teams who could take interest in Martinez and Vasquez could be the New York Mets, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic speculated.
But this is only if the Mets find the asking price for Willson Contreras and David Robertson of the Chicago Cubs too steep.
