Reddit Prohibits Posting Of Nude Photos, Videos Without Consent Of Subject
Another round of nude celebrity selfie leaks, or the Fappening, is out of the question insofar as sharing site Reddit is concerned. The portal officially banned on Wednesday the posting of nude photos that the subject didn’t allow to be published.
With the new policy, Reddit admitted it failed in late 2014 to prevent the site from serving as cache of the filched nude images of A-listers such as Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton.
In a statement, Reddit admits, “Last year, we missed a chance to be a leader in social media when it comes to protecting your privacy – something we’ve cared deeply about since reddit’s inception,” quotes Huffington Post.
It said whether the person on the image is a celebrity or not, if the photo or video or digital image is nude, showing sexual excitement or engaged in sexual conduct and it is posted or linked to reddit without that person’s permission, the site would no longer allow it.
This Revised Privacy Policy takes effect on March 10, 2015.
Those who felt their images were posted sans this permission are advised to send an email to contact@reddit.com to have the offending image removed as soon as possible. But they have to file a complaint to have their images removed, points out Webpronews.
In 2014, when the Fappening led to lawsuits, Reddit took down a forum where filched nude photos of several female celebrities were shared, but it allowed the forum with 30,000 members “r/photoplunder” to remain.
Explaining what appears to be a double standard, Reddit systems administrator Jason Harvey said it removed images required by law and breach rules of the Web site, but kept a neutral stand for other images.
Revenge porn victims are angry at Reddit because it removed the images of celebrities, but because they are not famous, they become victims of involuntary porn.
