Reeva Steenkamp Murder: Oscar Pistorius 'Fired Shots Through the Bathroom Door'
"The Blade Runner" Oscar Pistorius admits in court yesterday of firing shots at the bathroom door while claiming that he mistook his girlfriend for a burglar.
At the Pretoria magistrates court yesterday, Oscar gave out details for the very time about the murder case of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. He said that he was on the balcony of his house when he heard noises in the middle of the night. Thinking that someone has broken into his house, he instinctively fired shots at the bathroom door.
After firing the bullets, it was only then that he realized that Reeva was not in bed. So he smashed opened the door and tried to help a bloodied Reeva who was still alive at that time.
A sworn affidavit from Pistorius was read aloud in the courtroom. He described the chain of events that happened on February 13 until the death of Reeva.
"I have been informed I have been accused of murder - I deny the accusation. Nothing can be further from the truth that I planned the murder of my girlfriend. On February 13 Reeva would have gone out with her friends, me with mine. She wanted to stay at home," he said.
"I was watching TV. My legs were off. She was doing yoga. At the end of the evening we got into bed. I'm acutely aware of people gaining entries to homes to commit crime, I've received death threats. I sleep with my 9mm under my bed. I woke up to close the sliding door and heard a noise in the bathroom," the statement reads.
"I was scared and didn't switch on the light. I got my gun and moved towards the bathroom. I screamed at the intruder because I did not have my legs on I felt vulnerable. I fired shots through the bathroom door and told Reeva to call police. I walked back to the bed and realized Reeva was not in bed. It's then it dawned on me it could be her in there," he said. "I kicked the door open. Called paramedics and complex security. I tried to carry her downstairs for help. I tried to help her but she died in my arms."
Oscar also said that he was "deeply in love" with Reeva and she even bought him a Valentine's Day gift. The model instructed him not to open it until the next day.
Pistorius broke down several times through the trial and had to be comforted by his family. Asking for bail, Pistorius said that he will not evade his trial. He also noted that he did not flee and waited for the police to arrive at the murder scene.
Meanwhile, friends close to Reeva and Oscar described the nature of relationship between the couple. They said that the couple never argued and Reeva described her boyfriend as a "gentleman." Another claims that the two are also house hunting.
For the meantime, Oscar Pistorius remains in custody until the next hearing begins again.
