Resident Evil: Afterlife is expected to pen strongly in the box office as the 3D film is the sole new wide release for this weekend in North America tomorrow. It is projected to earn at least $25 million during its first three days.
The 2007 film Resident Evil: Extinction opened to $23.7 million amassing $51 million total. Its performance at the office is just as good as 2004's Resident Evil: Apocalypse but bigger than the $40 million earningsl of 2002's Resident Evil. The latest film from the franchise will be distributed world-wide by Sony.
"We're feeling good," Sony distribution president Rory Bruer said. "This is a global play for us, and there is a lot of heat for the film throughout the world."
Afterlife star Wenworth Miller thinks that zombie movies like Resident Evil remain popular among movie-goers, as he says that there is something about evil that is "thoughtless and relentless."
"That is incredibly frightening, because it can't be reckoned with or reasoned with or stopped," the Hollywood actor said. "That onslaught of terror, I think, speaks to our darkest fears, that evil is coming for us and there's nothing we can do."
The 3-D Resident Evil: Afterlife will return to North American theaters on September 10.
