Richard Gere known for his roles in "American Gigolo" and "Pretty Woman" organized an auction at Christie's New York last Tuesday (Oct. 11).

The actor reportedly put 106 guitars in auction to which 4 of them didn't sell. A sum of $936,438 was totaled from all sales.

According to Kenny Keane, a specialist head of department musical instruments, guitars were a personal collection and hold a soft spot in Gere. The collection of American guitars and vintage amplifiers started 40 years ago.

"He wasn't outsourcing the purest examples of guitar making - ones that were unused the way say a coin or a stamp collector would collect," Keane said.

The actor's collection included several top brands like Fender and Gibson. Top of the collection was a Gibson 1960 Les Paul solid-body-electric guitar which was sold for $98,500 by an anonymous U.S. guitar collector.

The CF Martin & Co. Museum located in Nazareth, Pennsylvania bought 3 out of the top 10 guitars in auction. This includes the 1931 CF Martin guitar including the case that was quoted at $62,500, while another private buyer bought a 1960 Gibson electric guitar.

"They have been my true friends through the best and worst of times. I never planned to put together a collection. I just bought ones that I liked, the ones that sounded good and played well," Gere said about his collection.

"Some are very special. Although it's more than a little painful to let them go, each one has been played, loved and appreciated - and will be again." added the actor.

Proceeds of the auction will all go for humanitarian purposes all over the world.
