National Football League Player Riley Cooper probably wasn't expecting to see his name trending in social media sites for his play off-field.

The Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver has been under scrutiny by the public and netizens alike across the globe after a video of him using the N word at a Kenny Chesney concert surfaced on the worldwide web.

In the said video that seemed to be recorded using a mobile phone, the Eagles player was taped saying he will "fight every n***** here."

Jeffrey Lurie, Philadelphia Eagles owner, is 'shocked and appalled' by Cooper's insensitive comment.

"This sort of behaviour or attitude has no role in a civil society," the Eagles owner said.

The NFL issued a statement saying: "The NFL stands for diversity and inclusion. Statements like this are wrong, offensive and unacceptable."

NFL also reported that the Riley Cooper had acknowledged that he had been drinking during the said concert and that his racial comment occurred after he had a confrontation with an African-American security guard.

Cooper has since released a statement apologizing for his behaviour saying that he is 'ashamed and disgusted with himself' and promised to apologize to his teammates, majority of whom are of African-American descent.

He has also apologized in a press conference and in a series of tweets after the the video surfaced:

Howie roseman and to my teammates. I owe an apology to the fans and to this community. I am so ashamed, but there are no excuses. What I did — Riley Cooper (@RileyCooper_14) July 31, 2013

I am so ashamed and disgusted with myself. I want to apologize. I have been offensive. I have apologized to my coach, Jeffrey Lurie, and

The Eagles have since fined him an undisclosed amount for his insensitive behavior.

Michael Vick, quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles whose brother Marcus earlier placed an $1,000 reward on Cooper's head, spoke on behalf of the team saying that they have forgiven him. He even tweeted:

Riley's my friend Our relationship is mutual respect. He looked me in the eyes and apologized. I believe in forgiveness and I believe in him — Mike Vick (@MikeVick) August 1, 2013

The scandal is yet to blow over as the media backlash continues to go on.

Riley Cooper, who drafted by the Eagles in 2010, was expected to assume a larger role in the team's offense following Eagles teammate Jeremy Maclin's injury during training camp. It is unclear whether this scandal will affect his career.
