Rio 2016 Olympics: Australia ranks 10th on medal tally
Australia managed to bring home 29 medals from the concluded Rio 2016 Olympics and secured the last spot on the Top 10 list of countries with the most decorated Olympians.
Based on the official medal count, Australian athletes won eight gold medals, 11 silver medals and 10 bronze medals from the 15-day Olympic Games event held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Swimmer Emma McKeon, who was barred from attending the 2016 Olympics Closing Ceremony, took home the most medals with a gold from the Women’s 4x100 metre freestyle relay, two silver medals from Women’s 4x100 metre medley relay and Women’s 4x200 metre freestyle relay, and a bronze from Women’s 200 metre freestyle.
At least 422 athletes across 26 sports have represented Australia at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Majority of the Australian Olympic Team are rookies, 271 athletes. The youngest member of the team is 16-year-old footballer Ellie Carpenter, while 61-year-old esquestrian Mary Hanna is the eldest.
Garnering a total of 121 medals, the United States ranked first on the list of top 10 countries with 46 gold medals. This year, there were 558 American athletes who competed across 27 different sports.
The United Kingdom secured the 2nd spot in the list with 27 gold medals, while China ranked third with 26. Team Great Britain took home a total of 67 medals while Chinese athletes won 70 medals.
Russia took the fourth place with 19 gold medals while Germany won 12. Japan landed on the sixth spot with 12 gold medals, followed by France with 10. Athletes from the Republic of Korea managed to win 9 gold medals out of the 21 medals it secured from the Olympic Games.
Although tied with Australia’s eight gold medal tally, Italy secured the ninth place after winning 12 silver medals and eight bronze medals.
Host country, Brazil, ranked 13th with seven gold medals and a total of 19 medals from the 2016 Olympic Games.
The world’s best athletes will gather again after four years for the next Olympic Games to be held in Japan. By 2020, baseball/softball, karate, surfing, skateboarding and sports climbing will be included in new list of 28 sporting events in Tokyo 2020.
The UK hosted the 2012 Olympics in London while China hosted the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
