Rio 2016 Olympics: French swimmer accuses Sun Yang of passing purple pee, Irish boxer tests positive for drugs use
Doping charges continue to hound the ongoing Rio 2016 Olympics, with Chinese swimmer Sun Yang, who won the 200-meter freestyle race gold medal, being at the centre of the controversy. A French swimmer accused Sun of having a purple urine, hinting of drug use, while an Irish boxer failed his drug test.
It all began with Australian gold medalist in the 400-metre race Mack Horton calling Sun, the London 2012 champion in the same event, a drug cheat. The snide remarks harvested Horton hate comments from Chinese netizens, Australians hit back Sun’s fans by poking fun at the Chinese swimmer’s teeth.
On Tuesday, French swimmer Camille Lacourt, fifth placer in the 100-metre backstroke, said two or three athletes in swimming in each final are doped. Lacourt accuses Sun of passing purple-coloured urine to hint of drug use. “When I see the 200m podium I want to be sick, RMC, a French radio station, quotes Lacourt.
He adds, “I hope that FINA (the world governing body) is going to do react and stop this massacre, because it is getting sad.” News.com.au reports that the Chinese federation kept secret Sun’s serving a three-month doping ban in 2014.
Outside swimming, 23-year-old Irish boxer Michael O'Reilly tested positive for drugs and opted not to contest a provisional suspension, Mirror reports. As a consequence, O’Reilly would not compete in the middleweight division, said the Olympic Council of Ireland.
Sport Ireland conducted the random drug test on O’Reilly before the Irish team left for Brazil. He was informed of test results on Aug 4. He was a strong contender for a gold following his gold medal win at the European Games in Baku in 2015.
On Monday, the Irish boxing team suffered another blow when Paddy Barnes, captain of the boxing team and two-time Olympic bronze medalist, lost in his opening fight in the light-flyweight division.
