Rio 2016 Olympics: Japanese pole vaulter hits ‘below-the-belt’ foreign media coverage of his failure
The misfortune of Japanese pole vaulter Hiroki Ogita in causing the bar in the high jump to fall because his penis hit it has become viral. From a “funny” story, the event has become fodder for social media jokes, while the embarrassed athlete hit back at foreign media for wrong reportage.
The bar was at 17 feet, 4 inches which Ogita’s leg initially touched but it hit directly his manhood. The story became viral which embarrassed him so much that Ogita tweeted on Wednesday, “I never expected the foreign media to take me down like this.”
He continued, “It's one thing if it was true, but I have to say I'm pretty devastated that they'd go so far to make something up to mock and ridicule me so much,” quotes New York Daily News. But BBC cites a pole vaulting expert who blames the embarrassing video to an unfortunate camera angle.
David Yeo, a pole vaulting coach in Singapore, explains, “"He had already pressed on the crossbar so much … The crossbar was bound to dislodge. I think it was just the crumpling of the fabric which happened at the wrong position.”
On Twitter, Ogita became the butt of jokes because of his penis. Mark Waner writes, “This is obviously why I can’t pole vault.”
Luna Pixie says the first few paragraphs of the athlete’s explanation made her laugh, but she found Ogita to be “such a juvenile.” Millardy admits, “Shouldn’t laugh, but I did loudly.”
Andrew points out, “I would say that there are many wishing parts of their anatomy would get in the way.” Hon Sartor advices pole vaulters “a #gentleman wears briefs for the occasion.”
Because of unfortunate incident, the pole which vaulters use has been called a metaphor for a penis by Josh: Butler.
But Ogita sees a possible opportunity with his version of wardrobe malfunction in which he would get the last laugh. He tweeted, “It doesn't matter if you do it for a joke or whatever, I ask you to go and watch an actual game at a stadium for once. I hope you appreciate, even a bit, what a great sport pole vaulting is.”
