Robert Downey Jr.: 'The Avengers 2' To Reinvent ‘The Ultron’ Story
'THE AVENGERS 2' will be a sequel to the 2012 blockbuster that showcased the continuing adventures of the team of super human beings known as 'The Avengers' . The Marvel Studios panel at San Diego Comic-Con ended with writer-director Joss Whedon taking the stage at Hall H to announce the official title of Marvel's The Avengers 2, which is ... Avengers: Age of Ultron!
"Age of Ultron" is a recent Marvel Comics storyline so it'll be interesting to see how much they pick from that for the big screen sequel to the 2012 blockbuster.
Joss Whedon said that "The Avengers: Age of Ultron" will introduce a new origin for the robotic villain "We're doing our own version of the origin story of Ultron, and the other thing is, in the origin story there was Hank Pym, so a lot of people assumed he was going to be in the mix, but he's not, because we're basically taking the things from the comics for the movies that we need and can use. A lot of stuff has to fall by the wayside. We're crafting our own version of it where his origin comes more directly from the Avengers we already know about."
"I am putting my money on Ultron being created by Tony Stark which forces him back into his Iron Man gear after being in retirement. This would capitalize on the ending of IRON MAN 3 and also give a nice way for Robert Downey Jr. to jump back into the storyline."
So how will this film compare to 2012's 'The Avengers'?
"It's a little bit darker than the other film because Ultron is in the house," Whedon says. "There's a science fiction element that I think is a bit stronger than the other film... It is very much a global Avengers film. A lot of the movie has to do with their place, not just in America, but in the world."
THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON premiers on May 1, 2015.
