Rock climbing in Thailand
Slowly, Thailand's Railay/Krabi area is gaining recognition as a global climbing destination. Rock climbers from all over the world are starting to sit up and take notice, and more and more of them are coming to Thailand to try out the rock- and relax on the beach, of course.
Climbing in Thailand isn't just about great rock routes, although there is so much limestone around Railay that only a small fraction has been explored by climbers so far. It's also about the relaxed atmosphere, incredible views and easy access. Many of the climbs are right on the beach, above perfect white sand and looking out over clear blue water. If you're used to carrying heavy climbing gear long distances to get to the best climbs in the Yellowstone National Park or the European Alps, the beach climbing in Thailand is a revelation.
Instead of working hard and dealing with the cold weather and rainy conditions faced by visitors to other great climbing destinations, those who come to Thailand can really have a holiday from hard work and save their energy for the climbs.
Almost all the routes are bolted using the French grading system, familiar to most European climbers and many from other parts of the world. The bolts mean that you don't need to bring much gear with you and the routes are also fairly safe.
In some places it's possible to climb with nothing but rock climbing shoes and a chalk bag. Thailand has some of the best and safest deep water soloing anywhere. Climbers can leave the rope behind, take a boat out to the islands, and climb above the sea- if they fall off they get wet, but the water is warm.
You don't have to be a dedicated climber to enjoy the rock. There are routes challenging enough for the strongest professional climbers, but beginners won't be disappointed either. There are plenty of easy options and plenty of climbing schools and instructors who are more than happy to help anyone try rock climbing for the first time. Even the kids can have a go.
With a properly qualified instructor, rock climbing is very safe. There is no chance for hitting the ground from a great height- at worst, you risk a scraped knee or a bruised elbow, and even that is unlikely.
Thailand is also a much cheaper destination than Chamonix, Lofoten, Yosemite, and many other popular climbing spots. You get a lot of beautiful rock on stunning beaches, tasty food, and local culture for not much money. Whether you're looking for a new challenge for your next rock climbing holiday or you're just thinking of trying climbing one day, Railay is a great place to go.
