Roger Federer is Easily Favourite to Win the 2014 US Open
Roger Federer is easily favourite to win the 2014 US Open after Rafael Nadal has pulled out due to a wrist injury, according to reports. Federer will be playing at Flushing Meadows for his 60th consecutive Grand Slam tournament. He is going for his 18th Grand Slam title, it would be his sixth US Open title and his first since 2008.
Federer doesn't appear to be suffering from any rust after the substandard 2013 season. The 33-year-old Swiss athlete goes into the US Open on a hot streak. Federer has made it to the finals in the last four tournaments that he had participated. He has a record of 18 wins and two losses since the Roland Garros tournament, with wins at the Gerry Weber Open and Cincinnati Masters.
When defending champion Nadal announced on his Facebook account that he was pulling out of the tournament, Federer has secured the No. 2 seed, which only meant that Federer wouldn't have to play against his other rival and top seed Novak Djokovic until the finals. Federer has faced Djokovic in the US Open five times in the past, with their first meeting dated all the way back in 2007. Federer leads their head-to-head 3-2. Their last two meetings at the US Open were in the semifinals in 2010 and 2012, and the Serbian athlete won on both occasions. Would Federer really be able to win another Grand Slam trophy?
Following his recent victory at Cincinnati, which has made him qualify for the Barclay Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour Finals in London from Nov. 9 to Nov. 16, Federer said that he felt great with his win.
"I've been beating Top 10 players along the way and just enjoying myself out on court, playing some positive tennis, so it's really encouraging," Federer said via ATP's official website.
Meanwhile, Juan Martin del Potro, Alexandr Dolgopolov, Nicolas Almagro, and Tommy Haas have all withdrawn from the 2014 US Open.
