Roger Federer Not Good Enough Against Novak Djokovic In 2014 US Open Declares Tennis Legend John McEnroe
Former tennis champion John McEnroe has made his pick for the 2014 US Open and he’s predicting that Novak Djokovic of Serbia will win another Grand Slam title in New York over the likes Roger Federer of Switzerland, Andy Murray of Great Britain, Milos Raonic of Canada, Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria and other top contenders.
McEnroe made the revelation via ESPN saying that he’s betting on Djokovic to win it all in New York although Federer remains as the next biggest threat.
“I would give a slight, slight favourite to Djokovic based on it being best-of-five. He’s younger and he can go the distance perhaps a little bit more easily than Roger at this stage. A little bit,” McEnroe declared.
McEnroe also added that having Rafael Nadal out due to a right wrist injury will bode well for Roger Federer, who appears to have an easier draw over Novak Djokovic.
“Obviously not having to deal with (Nadal) is a huge positive for him potentially down the road if he’s at a stage at the end of the event,” McEnroe said.
There is an argument to be made that McEnroe might be off with his prediction for this one as Djokovic has fallen by the wayside in the preparatory tournaments—Rogers Cup in Toronto and Cincinnati Masters in the USA-- leading up to the US Open while Federer made the finals twice in the same tourneys and actually won a title.
However, Djokovic have been successful the big-time tournaments this year including the 2014 Wimbledon Championship over none other than rival Federer. Djokovic beat the Federer, 6–7 (7), 6–4, 7–6(4), 5–7, 6–4 in the championship round at the All-England Club and McEnroe believes that the 27-year-old Serbian will have more energy throughout the tournament compared to the 33-year-old Federer.
Roger Federer is aiming to improve on the world record 17 Grand Slam titles and sixth US Open crown after winning from 2004 to 2008. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic is gunning for his eighth Grand Slam title overall and the second in the US Open after winning in New York in 2011.
