Roger Federer skips clay tune-ups, announces tentative schedule for 2016
Roger Federer has announced his tentative schedule for the 2016 tennis season, which was posted on his official website and accounts on social media. Notably, Federer plans to skip a number of clay tune-up events and is eyeing to play only the Roland Garros.
Smart scheduling is the key for Federer next year. He will begin his season by defending his title at the Brisbane International. Federer will also not look past the first grand slam of the season, Australian Open, where he suffered a shocking third round elimination this year.
Federer will also play in Rotterdam, which he skipped this year before defending his title at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. He will then head to Indian Wells for the BNP Paribas Open. However, the 17-time grand slam champion will not take part in the Davis Cup, Miami, Monte Carlo, Rome and in Madrid, according to the schedule that he posted on his website.
It is going to be a tough summer for Federer with the Rio Olympics taking place between the Toronto and Cincinnati tournaments. He has announced that he will take part in the Rogers Cup, another tournament that he skipped this season. He will also return to Cincinnati to defend his title after Rio.
Federer wants to ensure that he is able to keep the balance in claiming more titles on tour and winning the elusive Olympic gold medal. Federer won a gold medal in the men’s doubles event during the 2008 Beijing Olympics but lost the men’s singles to Andy Murray at the 2012 London Olympics.
This year, Federer played 18 events. He won six titles and finished the season with a 63-11 win-loss record.
