Roger Federer And Stanislas Wawrinka To Play In An Exhibition Match
Roger Federer will play in an exhibition match in Africa. He will be joined by fellow compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka. All the proceeds from the exhibition match will go to Roger Federer Foundation.
The scrimmage will take place on Dec. 21, 2014, according to the statement shared on Federer's official website. It will be staged at the Hallenstadion Zurich. "I'm looking forward to playing Stan in Zurich in late December," Federer said. "It will be a fantastic evening and I hope we can meet a large number of fans and play a great match," the 17-time Grand Slam champion added.
Wawrinka, on the other hand, is also excited to play with Federer. He said he is thrilled to become a part of a tennis event for a good cause. "Helping children in need is something that means a lot to me," Wawrinka said.
Currently, there are 136,000 children who receive assistance from Federer's foundation. Federer's foundation aims to provide quality education in South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Malawi, and Zimbabwe, as well as in Switzerland. It is anticipated that one million children will benefit from the foundation by 2018.
In January, Federer's foundation has also hosted an exhibition match between the 17-time Grand Slam champion and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. More than one million was raised in the event that was held at Melbourne Park and attended by other tennis greats such as Lleyton Hewitt, Patrick Rafter, and Tony Roche.
Meanwhile, Federer has defeated Simon Gilles of France, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (2), to win his 23rd Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) title at the 2014 Shanghai Rolex Masters on Oct. 12. It was Federer's fourth title of the current season, his second ATP World Tour Masters 1000 trophy. Speaking via ATP's website, Federer said that he was "extremely happy" to have won his first Shanghai title. Federer has reportedly won $798 prize money and 1000 points from the tournament.
As for Wawrinka, he has joined Federer in the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals at The O2 Arena in London from Nov. 9 to Nov. 16. Wawrinka, who was beaten by Gilles in the second round of the Shanghai tournament, is the fourth player to qualify in the prestigious London finals.
