Roger Federer is apparently to start a sports agency, as reported by the New York Times. Federer has teamed up with his long-time agent Tony Godsick to put up an agency called Team8. Aside from the tennis superstar and his agent, two American wealthy sponsors will also join them. The business venture is going to be based in Cleveland, Ohio.

In July 2012, the contracts of both Federer and Godsick with IMG, one of the leading sports agencies in the worlds, have expired. They decided not to renew their contracts and have come up with the idea of creating their own agency instead.

Godsick told the New York Times that they only hope to manage a small stable of iconic sports personalities. "We're really trying to be selective here," said Godsick. Federer's agent also stated that their company is not going to try to sign as many athletes as they can like what other sports agencies are doing.

Along with Federer, the sports agency will represent Juan Martin del Potro and Grigor Dimitrov. Godsick also explained that even through Federer is a partner for the sports agency, the Swiss athlete will be a client for the time being.

Federer is the highest-paid tennis athlete as ranked by Forbes. It sure looks like Federer is focused on having a business that will work really well.

It wouldn't be the first time that sports agents split from their employers and taking some of their biggest clients with them. Once an athlete has established his or her own name, they really don't need the services of a huge firm. Their charisma and star power can pretty much generate profitable business deals and transactions.

Meanwhile, the tennis athlete who is currently ranked sixth in the world, is busy training in Dubai. Federer is expected to start the 2014 tennis season at the Brisbane International. Then he will compete next at the Australian Open. He has constantly been training and working hard. A lot of his fans are hopeful that Federer will have a better season on 2014.
