Roger Federer stared at three match points but never blinked. Gael Monfils had the Swiss Maestro on the ropes but failed to go for the kill. The result was a five-set win by Federer to the tune of 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 and Federer’s alive at the 2014 US Open with a chance to net the 18th Grand Slam title of his career.
Down 15-40 points, 4-5 games in the fourth set, Federer channeled the greatness that has made him perhaps the best player in the planet in this generation or even, of all-time. Federer went on to win that game and steal that set and force the deciding fifth and final set.
With the match tied at two sets apiece, it was all Federer. Too poised, Federer easily won the fifth, 6-2 over the hapless Frenchman, who was too emotionally-drained of the lost opportunities earlier in the match.
“It's unbelievable, it's incredible. It was awesome for both guys. The crowd had to get into it. It helped me to get it done for sure,” Federer declared in the post-match on-court interview showing appreciation for the raucous pro-Federer crowd at center court.
For the first couple of hours, it appeared that Federer is once again done in the big tournaments with Monfils gaining the huge advantage, two sets to none after the first two.
“Just go down fighting. Just don't give up a point,” Federer said.
The Swiss fought, did not give up the on consecutive match points and the rest is history. Federer will meet Marin Cilic of Croatia in the semifinal round while Novak Djokovic of Serbia faces Kei Nishikori of Japan in the other side of the draw.
