'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story': New director and script rewrites reveal movie in 'crisis'
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” the first spin-off of the franchise, is reportedly in “crisis” mode. After Disney ordered expensive reshoots of nearly half the movie, new reports suggest that a new director has been brought onboard to help finish the movie.
According to a report by The Playlist, “The Bourne Legacy” director Tony Gilroy, along with Scott Z. Burns rewrote some part of the script of the “Star Wars’” spin-off last summer. Disney is apparently so impressed with the work that they have now brought Gilroy to supervise the filming of the movie in London.
It was previously reported that Christopher McQuarrie would be involved in the reshoots. McQuarrie, however, slammed all such armours. Gilroy is now being reported to be helming or supervising the reshoots.
The main reason for the reshoots is said to Disney disagreeing with Gareth Edwards’ vision, which is supposedly “dark” and it seems like he has made a “war movie.” In a previous interview he had said that “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” would have characters with “grey” morality, as opposed to the traditional characters in the franchise who are either pure good or pure bad.
The main plot of the movie revolves around a group of Rebels attempting to steal the plans for the Death Star. The director teased that the Rebels will have to pay a “heavy price” for their actions, suggesting that not many would survive by the end of the film.
It is being speculated that Disney is not happy with this bleak ending of the movie. Gilroy has reportedly been brought onboard to add some elements of “fun” in the movie, to make it seem like a traditional movie from the franchise.
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is slated to be released on Dec. 16, 2016. A report by Page Six confirms that executives at Disney are not happy with the first cut that Edwards delivered, and this has put the movie in “crisis.”
