Romance Afoot: ‘Downtown Abbey’ Newbie Jack Ross Loves Up Lady Rose
"Downton Abbey" newcomer Jack Ross has already started an unlikely romance with Lady Rose, but sources say the pair will have more of these love-ins as they were spotted kissing in one of the show's new episode.
"Downtown Abbey" was shrouded in sadness and gloom when it began the season, but a few romances might be expected in the series. This, of course, includes that of Jack Ross and Lady Rose.
Recently released photos show the great niece of the Countess of Grabtham, Lady Rose, on a river boat ride with the American jazz singer.
The unlikely relationship will not go well, according to sources. Jack, played by actor Gary Carr, is seen rowing a boat but later stops as he pulls in Lady Rose for a kiss.
Miss Rose is wearing a patterned dress in the photos and paired her attire with a white hat. Jack Ross, on the other hand, looked caper in a fedora hat and a grey suit.
The arrival of the American singer caused quite a stir in Downton, since he is the first black character in the series. Lady Rose's aristocratic family was flabbergasted when Lady Rose chose to dance with Ross.
Ross has also gotten a few ignorant comments about him visiting Africa. Mr Carson said, "Have you never thought of visiting Africa?" Jack Ross replied with, "And why should I go to Africa, Mr Carson? I'm no more African than you are."
Sources say the Jack Ross character is based on Leslie "Hutch" Hutchinson, a cabaret star in the '20s.
Fans of the show were appalled when one of their favourite charaters was raped. Joanna Froggatt, who plays Anna Bates in the series said, "We all expected there to be a certain controversy when we tackled that subject matter, but I didn't expect it to be quite as controversial as it has been."
The actress added that the show was not just aiming for shock value but that Julian Fellowes "really wanted to explore the emotional journey" of "Downton Abbey" characters.
According to Express, Froggatt is as frustrated as "Downton Abbey's" viewers that Anna Bates is keeping what she's feeling to herself.
